Voice Media Group Takes on Yelp with New Mobile Apps

Alternative newspapers including LA Weekly and the Village Voice are reclaiming their role as the go-to sources for recommended local events, restaurants, and bars.

Parent company Voice Media Group has launched a redesigned mobile app for these and 9 other markets that can go head-to-head with Yelp.

Designed to be a pocket-sized resource for what’s fun and what’s happening now in your city, the app makes event listings, local food and drink reviews searchable on an iPhone or iPad.

The publishers took the readers’ advice and added news and other fresh stories, said Voice Media Group director of content Stacy Volhein, so the digital versions of the alternative weeklies will still have the entertainment value of the print editions.

VMG has also launched Pictureshow, a slideshow app full of curated collections of beautiful high resolution photos that’s native to the iPad.

While some publishers hoard their professional photographs, VMG has given readers the tools to share single pictures or whole albums (as well as articles) on Twitter, Facebook, email, and (coming soon) Pinterest.

In January, VMG struck a deal with Foursquare to share its “Best Of” lists and create badges with the local check-in service.

Filled with editorial content as well as listings, could these new apps challenge consumer-powered recommendation sites like Yelp? “I believe so,” said Volhein. “We are the trusted source for what’s local.”

Facebook Testing New Mobile Like Icon, App Install Ads

In an effort to make mobile ads more likeable, Facebook is apparently tweaking sponsored stories and application install ads in the mobile news feed, according to sister site Inside Facebook.

Inside Facebook noticed a couple of aesthetic tweaks on the mobile news feed following Facebook’s latest iOS update. There’s now a new like icon, and the style of the mobile app install ad has been changed a bit. These changes are reportedly specific to iOS, but will likely roll out to Android the next time Facebook updates that native app.

Facebook also tweaked mobile app install ads for iOS users. Previously, these kinds of ads included a banner image and a call to action to install the app. Now the add has the header of, “Suggested App.”

The Mobile Social Photo Explosion [INFOGRAPHIC]

The birth of camera photography can be traced back to 1826, when the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photograph, entitled View from the Window at Le Gras.

Fast forward to the present, and a staggering 3.5 trillion photos have been taken in the past 185 years. But this is absolutely the tip of the iceberg – at the current rate of 380 billion new images being captured every year, the total amount of photographs ever made should double to 7 trillion in less than a decade from now.

The digital revolution has made an enormous impact on photography, and smartphones and social media have been hugely instrumental in this massive growth. 300 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily, and overall Facebook has 10,000 times more photos than the Library of Congress. Twitter (6.9 million daily active mobile users) and Instagram (7.3 million daily active mobile users) combined account for hours of photo-taking usage each month, and photos make up 42 percent of all posts on Tumblr.

The money stat? 741 million mobile phones worldwide have some kind of photo capability.
