Social Analytics Service Topsy Adds Email Alerts and Reports

Topsy has announced the launch of two new features for quickly delivering social media insights to the people at the office who need them most. Starting today, subscribers to the social analytics service can sign up for email alerts and reports on trending topics.

Offering a real-time analysis of public conversations

, Topsy is one of three companies that recently scored a deal with Twitter for full access to the firehose of Tweets. It has both a consumer-facing search bar for discovering trends and an enterprise service for monitoring organizations and brands.

Topsy will now use email alerts to immediately notify the accountholders of an increase in mentions or a change in sentiment surrounding the topics they follow before they start trending, the company said.

The reports, which are aimed at senior executives and managers, are more of a digest of the conversations surrounding a topic in a given timeframe, or a comparison of how often a particular brand is mentioned compared to a competitor.  They include information such as the top Tweets, links, and media as well as a sentiment analysis.

“Topsy Pro is getting significant traction with brands and media organizations as well as the agencies that serve them. A consistent request that we’ve heard from these organizations is the ability to monitor all conversations and be proactively alerted with the most important information to their business,” said Jamie de Guerre, vice president of product at Topsy, in a statement.  ”Topsy Alerts and Reports deliver on what our customers have been asking for by putting the most important insights in their inbox on a regular basis and at the outset of breaking news or trends.”

McAfee Social Protection Facebook Photos App Launches For Android

Computer security software provider McAfee announced that its McAfee Social Protection application, which launched in free public beta for Windows users (Internet Explorer 8 or higher and Firefox 8 and higher) last August, is now available via Google Play for Android devices.

McAfee Social Protection displays users’ Facebook photos as blurs, which can only be displayed properly once users’ friends have installed McAfee Social Protection. Photos cannot be downloaded, shared, or captured as screen shots. And the app includes facial-recognition software that alerts users if photos are uploaded to the social network that might have those users included but not tagged.

Users of the app can:

  • Upload photos from their cameras, mobile devices, or libraries.

  • Share photos with Facebook friends.

  • Check Facebook friends’ protected photos.

  • Select photos to protect and determine who can view them.

  • Determine if friends will be able to see posts about albums.

Android users: Will you download and use McAfee Social Protection?

We Are Social Adds Paid Media Support

Social media agency We Are Social has primarily focused on earned and owned media, but the company feels that as the lines between paid, earned, and owned Facebook media are becoming blurred, it’s time to expand its offerings. We Are Social announced that it is offering support for companies that plan to pay for advertising on Facebook and other social media sites. The company hired David Gilbert, formerly of TBG Digital, to run this new program.

We Are Social is mainly known for research and insight, as well as its strategic and creative work with owned and earned media. The company has worked with major clients such as Heineken, Adidas, and Heinz. Now, with the hire of Gilbert from TBG Digital, We Are Social feels that it is uniquely positioned to take on paid advertising.

The company notes that this new service will help marketers deal with the convergence between owned, paid, and earned media on Facebook and other sites — such as when Facebook asks a brand to promote posts instead of just simply buying an ad. We Are Social will provide support for planning and purchasing advertising on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and Sina Weibo.

Gilbert explained how We Are Social can now offer what no one else can:

We can also compete head-to-head against any generalist media agency because we have more specialist knowledge and a better approach to Facebook than them – our team includes experienced people from original Facebook API (application-programming interface) Alpha Partners, so there’s no one out there who has more knowledge of Facebook paid media than us.

Social Media Newsfeed: Facebook Promoted Posts | Obama Hangout

Users Can Now Promote Facebook Friends’ Posts (AllFacebook)
A few months ago, Facebook made it possible for users to pay to promote their own posts. The social network announced Thursday that now, users can do the same for their friends’ posts. CNET To promote a post, just click on the menu button on the top right corner of a post, according to images of the feature provided by Facebook. Facebook thinks people will want to use this feature to promote charity fundraisers and events, or help friends rent out their apartments. Mashable The feature will be rolling out gradually to all users, says Facebook, and won’t be available to those of us with more than 5,000 friends and followers — presumably because it’s technologically tough to promote a post in that many feeds. Also, you won’t be able to change the privacy settings on the post you’re promoting, so if it was set to just that person’s friends, then only your mutual friends will see it if you promote it. TechCrunch One issue, though, is that you don’t need a friend’s permission to promote their posts. And depending on what they said, the extra eyeballs might not always be appreciated. Bloomberg Sluggish profitability growth and sagging shares are pressuring Facebook to find new ways to generate more revenue from its 1.1 billion members. In the past year, the company has announced mobile advertising, tools for marketers on desktops and a feature for users to send friends gifts via the site.

Even Obama Knows Patent Trolls are ‘Extorting’ Money (ars technica)
President Barack Obama held his second public Google+ hangout on Thursday, taking questions from Americans from around the country the day after his State of the Union address. During the event, an issue came up that’s pretty important in the tech world, but still marginal or even largely unknown to the nation at large: patent trolls, the shell companies that have no business beyond suing over patents. The Washington Post In addition, Obama defended his proposals to ban certain weapons and bullet magazines and expand background checks on gun buyers. He said that, even with the Second Amendment, Americans can’t go to a store to purchase grenade launchers. PC Magazine Obama pointed to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who told the president that he’d taught himself to code, primarily because he was interested in gaming. There’s a whole generation of kids who could benefit from getting a head start on similar high-tech learning. It “engages kids,” Obama said.

Russian Blogging Platform Censored in ‘Pedophile’ Controversy (The Daily Dot)
Civil liberties advocates throughout Russia are saying “I told you so” — or would be, if the government hadn’t blocked access to their blogs. A controversial Russian Internet censorship law passed last year, ostensibly to fight child pornography, was instead used to shut down LJ.rossia.org, a non-profit LiveJournal-style site that hosts hundreds of popular blogs.

Twitter Adds ‘Top Tweets’ Ranking Filter to API to Help Developers Reduce Noise (AllTwitter)
Over on its official Developers Blog, Twitter has announced two new fields that will be added to the metadata that is contained within all tweets, allowing developers using Twitter’s API to better filter and improve the overall quality of the stream. A new filter attribute will let applications that display tweets by value, with a rating of “none,” “low,” “medium” and (eventually) “high,” with the latter two entries correlating with the “Top Tweets” results for searches made on Twitter.com.

Google Enables Downloading of Blogger Blogs and Google+ Pages Through its Data Porting Tool Takeout (The Next Web)
Google has added the ability to download Blogger blogs and Google+ pages to its Takeout data portability tool. This will allow users of these products to get a structured download of their data in a couple of widely accepted formats.

The Mobile Social Photo Explosion [INFOGRAPHIC]

The birth of camera photography can be traced back to 1826, when the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce made the first permanent photograph, entitled View from the Window at Le Gras.

Fast forward to the present, and a staggering 3.5 trillion photos have been taken in the past 185 years. But this is absolutely the tip of the iceberg – at the current rate of 380 billion new images being captured every year, the total amount of photographs ever made should double to 7 trillion in less than a decade from now.

The digital revolution has made an enormous impact on photography, and smartphones and social media have been hugely instrumental in this massive growth. 300 million photos are uploaded to Facebook daily, and overall Facebook has 10,000 times more photos than the Library of Congress. Twitter (6.9 million daily active mobile users) and Instagram (7.3 million daily active mobile users) combined account for hours of photo-taking usage each month, and photos make up 42 percent of all posts on Tumblr.

The money stat? 741 million mobile phones worldwide have some kind of photo capability.

Boomerang Makes Social Gifting A Local Experience

Social gifting, which is becoming wildly popular on Facebook, has largely been conducted through gift cards and major retailers. Boomerang wants to make social gifting a local experience. The Chicago-based program is expanding to New York, Indianapolis, and Austin, Texas, offering small businesses and local retailers a chance to get in on the social gifting fun.

Boomerang takes a user’s Facebook location and interest data to suggest an experience-based present. Say you have a friend in New York who enjoys a good locally brewed beer or is in need of some pampering at a spa. A user can give a gift from a local small business, making it a little more special than a general gift card.

Boomerang started in Chicago, but it has now opened up shop in Indianapolis, Austin, and New York. If you don’t have friends in those cities, you can still utilize Boomerang for more general gifts, from retailers such as Foot Locker, Barnes & Noble, and Victoria’s Secret. People can also give the gift of charity by donating to organizations such as The Greater Chicago Food Depository and Mercy Corps. Users can redeem the gifts online or using their phones.

When a user decides to give a gift, Boomerang delivers it in a very visually pleasing way, with an attractive virtual envelope. The benevolent act also creates an open graph action when it is delivered and claimed:

Boomerang Founder and CEO Zachary Smith spoke with AllFacebook about how the program has changed social gifting by including an experience-based platform, helping out local businesses:

These are all things that you can go out and do together, and we think that makes for a really powerful gift … When we started doing more research in the gifting space, we realized there’s a ton of money in play there. There’s a lot exciting happening with social and mobile, but not many people are doing anything with local businesses. So, we thought: Wouldn’t local packages and experiences make great gifts? So we went out and we interviewed a few hundred people here in Chicago about their preferences in social gifting, and 70 percent of them told us that they would prefer to give a gift from a local business than a gift card from a national retailer.

Readers: Do you think Boomerang is a step in the right direction for small businesses?

Top 5 Social Media Tips You Should Know About

According to comScore, an internet business analyst firm, Americans spend approximately 14% of their time on social networking sites.

The majority of business owners now use social media to grow and promote their enterprises. It is essential that you know how to effectively use social media to prevent you from wasting your time updating your Facebook page, and sending out tweets when no one really has any interest in reading them. Here are the Top 5 social media tips to get you started.

NUMBERS ARE NOT EVERYTHING

Having thousands of fans or followers does not necessarily translate into sales. Even if you are not promoting a business and you have thousands of friends, it does not mean that you are going to have more social interactions, especially if you do not have anything in common.

Spending copious amounts of time looking for followers, when they have no interest in you or your products is a waste of time.

STICK WITH THE FREE AND SIMPLE SERVICES

You can achieve just as much in terms of promotion with a service that is free than with one you have to pay for.

If you are new to the world of social media you should start with a simple site such as twitter and Facebook which both have millions of users worldwide.

LIMIT YOUR EFFORTS

You don't need to have a profile on every single social networking site. Stick to a handful of the best sites and link them all together.

For example, you can have your twitter page link to your blog and Facebook page.

BE MORE SOCIABLE

Instead of directly selling your products or services, engage your followers in conversation. Social media takes a different approach than other web based techniques such as email marketing.

You have to sell yourself as well as your business.

BE HONEST

Refrain from writing fake positive reviews to gain popularity, savvy social media users will see through this and it could harm your reputation.

Follow these Top 5 social media tips if you want your business to be a success online.
