LinkedIn Remakes Job Search Feature

LinkedIn will roll out a streamlined version of its job posting feature over the next few weeks that will include more granular search options, the company said today.

The move follows remakes of the social network’s home page and profiles last year.

The rejiggered search will allow users to search job openings at companies at which they have a connection through LinkedIn. Job seekers will also be able to hone job listings by country, ZIP code, industry and job function.

Users who pay for Job Seeker Premium subscriptions will additionally be able to delimit job searches by salary.

Yet, LinkedIn’s trouble with job listings in most fields isn’t too many but too few. For instance, a search for lawyer within 50 miles of a San Francisco ZIP code returned just seven results. LinkedIn has even fewer listings for blue-collar jobs.

The company’s Talent Solutions product for recruiters accounted for the biggest share of its revenue in 2012.

Facebook Outlines Steps To Make Graph Search Safe For Teen Users

With testing of Facebook’s new graph search feature in full swing, the social network took steps to reassure parents of teens that their children are not at risk, outlining steps that were taken to protect users aged 13 to 17.

In a note on the Facebook Safety page, the social network reminded users that those aged 13 to 17 can only share information on their timelines and status updates with friends of friends, and not with the entire Facebook community.

Also, when it comes to graph search, Facebook Safety said the results of certain searches that could potentially identify its teen users by age or location will only be available to their friends or friends of friends who are also between the ages of 13 and 17.

Facebook Manager of Privacy and Safety Nicky Jackson Colaco told CNN:

What we really wanted to do was try to identify things that could be even more sensitive for minors — that would identify them by their age and location. Those kinds of things are more sensitive, and we wanted to really make sure they had an even more restrictive experience.

This is true across Facebook. It’s really important to us that minors represent their real age. If they tell us they’re 25, they’re not getting these protections and a lot of other protections we offer.

The Facebook Safety note also re-emphasized the following general tips for users concerned about privacy:

As always, when sharing anything on Facebook, remember to use good judgment and share responsibly. Learn more about tools to help control what appears in search below:

Manage your activity log: Activity log makes it easy to see the things you’ve posted on Facebook, make changes to the audience of past photos and other posts, and choose what appears on your timeline. We recently announced some new tools that make it easier to take action on multiple photos, such as untagging them, or requesting that they are removed with one click. If you are ever concerned who can see content you have posted or shared on Facebook, review it on your activity log.

Review about me: In addition to your activity log, review the “about” tab to check any basic info you have shared with others on your profile, such as your current city, your workplace, pages you like, or your education. The same people who can see this info on your profile can search for this info about you. Check this section to make sure you are comfortable with the audience you have chosen to share this information with.

Reporting: As always, do not hesitate to report any abusive content you see on Facebook in the report links throughout site.

Readers: Do you think Facebook is doing enough to protect its younger users when it comes to graph search?

Twitter Search Updated To Pull In Results Older Than A Week!

Twitter recently updated its search. Previously Twitter search results only displayed Tweets that were a week old. But now, with the new update the users will be able to search through tweets that are much older than one week.

Here are twitter's views on the update, “As we roll this out over the coming days, the Tweets that you’ll see in search results represent a fairly small percentage of total Tweets ever sent. We look at a variety of types of engagement, like favorites, retweets and clicks, to determine which Tweets to show. We’ll be steadily increasing this percentage over time, and ultimately, aim to surface the best content for your query. For now, enjoy your trip down memory lane!”

Its a useful update, will help users browse through older information. Although, in our opinion Twitter should have rolled out this update much earlier.

Yahoo, Facebook Talking Search? Not Likely

A report surfaced in U.K. newspaper The Telegraph over the weekend that Yahoo President and CEO Marissa Mayer and Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg were in talks aimed at having their respective companies collaborate on Web-based search, but AllThingsD pointed out that Yahoo is already locked into a search partnership with Microsoft that is unlikely to be terminated anytime soon.

The Telegraph mentioned the agreement between the two Internet giants to share Yahoo News on Facebook and the settlement of their long-running dispute over patents, adding a previous quote from Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg about search, in which he said the social network is “pretty uniquely positioned to answer the questions people have,” but, as AllThingsD pointed out, all the newspaper had in terms of a search partnership between the two companies was a statement that board members expected the talks to head in that direction.

AllThingsD said the Yahoo-Microsoft partnership is unlikely to end in the near future, adding that Microsoft would likely fight any attempts by Yahoo to bail out early, and that if Yahoo and Facebook are indeed in talks, they might revolve around more content sharing, tighter integration of their respective services, or advertising.

Readers: What do you think Yahoo and Facebook are up to, if they are actually up to anything at all?

What is Search Engine Optimization?

If you are a normal to average internet user who is aware of the things happening around it, then you have probably come across the term SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

Now this might just sound like a common term for you, but do you really know the definition of it? What is search engine optimization and how do you use it?

>

SEO is a technique that is being used and practiced specifically by those who aim to rank up their websites. When you are looking for something at any search engine such as Google, what you do is type in the keywords or topic that you are looking for, right?

Then you are being led to several matches although it is quite noticeable as to how certain sites are at the uppermost corner of the search. Did you ever wonder why this happens?

How do these sites manage to be on top of the ranking? The reason behind it is the magic of SEO. It is a strategy used in Internet Marketing by optimizing a website.

But first, you will need to have a definite plan on how you are going to utilize this technique.

Basically, SEO falls into two wide categories which are Black Hat and White Hat SEO. Black Hat SEO uses tricky ways to generate more traffic to a certain website.

This can be done in sneaky ways such as stuffing keywords and paid linking. If you are after an honest to goodness technique, then the White Hat SEO is for you.

This can be achieved by using clean and exact methods that will genuinely draw interest from readers. Some of these methods include adding photos and videos to your posts.

Improving the quality of your content is also another way to gain more viewers. Although the sneaky techniques may be successful at ranking higher, search engines are now becoming less lenient about this so it is always better to do the right thing when it comes to optimizing your site.
