Facebook Testing Scaled-Back News Feed Ads

Facebook is testing a new image size for ads without social context (where users or their friends are connected to the advertising brand). Sister site Inside Facebook reported Monday that ads that lacked social context appeared smaller than ads coming from brands users or their friends have liked.

According to Inside Facebook, a Facebook spokesperson said the site is “testing different sizes based on connectedness.” News feed ads coming from brands that users or their friends have liked will still show up large, but ads coming from pages that neither users nor their friends have liked will show up smaller.

A common complaint regarding news feed ads is the amount of real estate that they take up on users’ screens. By making ads without social context smaller, it appears that Facebook is trying to remedy this situation.
