The 85th Annual Academy Awards were handed out Sunday night, and film fans took to Facebook during the ceremony to the tune of 66.5 million Oscar-related interactions, with the term “Oscars” tallying three times as many mentions as during the 2012 event, and the nominees for best picture totaling 20 times more mentions than the previous year.


The 2013 Oscars scored a 7.17 on the Facebook Talk Meter, besting the 2012 event, and it generated the most buzz in the Northeast (New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut) and in California.


Facebook offered more details on its users’ activity during Sunday night’s Oscars show:



  • Les Miserables had the most likes among the top films, with its largest body of fans located in London, and it was the top film among women and users aged 13 to 17.

  • Django Unchained earned the most mentions among its peers, and it was the top best picture choice among men, with Facebook users who liked the film also likely to have liked an earlier effort from best original screenplay winner and director Quentin Tarantino, Pulp Fiction.

  • Lincoln was the top choice among users of the social network aged 45 and up, and those who liked the film were also likely to like cable network The History Channel.

  • Lincoln star and best actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis drew the most buzz in New York and Los Angeles between the nomination announcements and Sunday night’s ceremonies.

  • Best actress winner Jennifer Lawrence was the most-talked-about actress during the period between the nominations and Sunday night’s awards, and the leader among men, while women favored Jessica Chastain of Zero Dark Thirty.

  • Best picture winner Argo was the most-talked-about winner of Sunday night, with mentions of the film skyrocketing 2,460 percent and mentions of director, star, and producer Ben Affleck soaring 23,500 percent during his acceptance speech.
